About the pronunciation model used in this course - We use the Biblical Greek pronunciation for the following reasons: (1) use of the Biblical Greek (Modern Greek) pronunciation leverages the student's knowledge to enjoy (a) a trip to Greece and (b) church liturgy, (2) the correct Classical Greek pronunciation is uncertain and different professors use different pronunciation models, (3) church liturgy today is done with the Modern Greek pronunciation, (4) the discovered Classical works are written with the Koine Greek ("Biblical") characters/accents/writing style and, therefore, it is inconsistent to use a Classical Greek pronunciation with Koine Greek characters, and (5) the Modern Greek pronunciation is very close to the Koine pronunciation. Thus, our course uses a pronunciation that matches the writing used in texts written in Koine Greek.

Course Description - The course divided teaches Ancient Greek in 3 parts. The Greek taught is the language known as Koine, or Alexandrian Greek or Biblical Greek. However, our course also teaches the language material relevant to Classical Greek.

A course goal is to provide a thorough teaching of Ancient Greek and, at the same time, make the course fun. Pictures, sounds, examples from Ancient Greek texts along with their citations, background information on historical aspects that make cited Greek texts more interesting, use of jokes and other fascinating texts are employed in order to add excitement in learning an important but difficult language.

Part 1 Description: This part teaches (a) the Greek alphabet and its evolution, (b) Koine/Biblical vocabulary of more than 1000 words, (c) the phonetics of the language, (d) the marks of the language, breathings, accents and accent rules. Thousands of interactive multimedia exercises are included. Where possible, included text is provided with citations to its author, work, book, section and page. Part 2 Description: Fundamentals of Greek Grammar, Comprehensive Syntax are explained and illustrated with numerous example texts and their citations showing the use of the noun cases, verb moods, tenses, infinitive and participle. Part 2 also has large texts that examine the development of Greek over the ages, several jokes, texts from the New Testament, Aesop fables, and other texts. Expected release is first quarter of 2008.

Detailed knowledge of Grammar is not so important because of the Perseus Project. Grammar and Syntax characteristics are very useful in the translation of Greek text. However, the grammatical characteristics of most words can be found with the Perseus Word Study Tool (http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/morphindex?lang=greek) where the user enters the word and the Perseus system provides the Grammar of the word plus a limited translation. On the other hand, Perseus does not provide Syntax of words or information on how a word is used in a sentence. Accordingly, Part 2 provides a thorough presentation of word Syntax and the translation of different word forms as well as a thorough but coarse explanation of Grammar.

In order to be able to provide an Ancient Greek course, we have had to create innovations beyond the ones used in our Modern Greek course (Read and Speak Greek CDROM). These innovations are listed below. We note that (b) is important because English books that provide the conjugation of Greek verbs are not easily available.

b. Searchable list of a large number of Ancient Greek verbs including all their verb forms (sold separately)
c. Use of numerous examples (with citations) from more than 200 ancient Greek texts (Classical and Biblical)
that illustrate Grammar and Syntax rules.
d. A method for forming the conjugation of composite verbs.
